Burl: A burl is an irregular growth on a tree. They are usually small and uncommon which is why burl wood is so valuable. A burl is composed of many small knots from dormant buds which makes the wood highly figured and beautiful. Each pen I make is unique because no two pieces of burl are quite the same.

Mallee Burl: A very rare wood from Australia. Mallee burls grow in very limited numbers on species of eucalyptus trees. The trees usually grow with multiple stems and are generally under 10 meters tall. Different species of eucalyptus produce different varieties of mallee burl, such as brown mallee burl and red mallee burl.

Amboyna Burl: This is a burl that grows on the Pterocarpus indicus tree from Indonesia and South East Asia. It is one of the rarest woods in the world. It ranges in color from yellow to orange to red.

Thuya Burl: Another very rare burl. This type of wood is from Morocco. It is a light brown and often has a very good figure.

Jarrah burl and red box burl are other varieties from Australia.
